Daidō Moriyama 森山大道 - The darker sides of urban life
"For me photography is not a means by which to create beautiful art, but a unique way of encountering genuine reality"
Born in Ikeda, Osaka, Dalido Moriyama studied photography under Takeji Iwamiya before moving to Tokyo in 1961 to work as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe. He produced a collection of photographs, Nippon gekijō shashinchō, which showed the darker sides of urban life and the less-seen parts of cities. In them, he attempted to show how life in certain areas was being left behind the other industrialised parts.
His work was often stark and contrasting within itself. One image could convey an array of senses; all without using color. His work was jarring, yet symbiotic to his own fervent lifestyle.
Among the most famous of Moriyama's works is the 1971 shot of a stray dog (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) and many others featuring everyday objects or landscapes shot from unfamiliar angles, giving them a stark perspective.
Among the artists to have influenced Moriyama are Andy Warhol, William Klein and the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima.

The Golden Filter - Hide Me
After their amazing singles 'Solid Gold' and 'Thunderbird' released in 2009, The Golden Filter release their third single off their debut album 'Voluspa' (out in April 26, 2010 on Brille Records).
The New York electropop/nu-disco group will release 'Hide Me' in April 19 and you can already download the song for free from their website.
PS: Rory Phillips' remix of the song is just amazing.

Gated Communities, a path to no-cities - La ciudad que huye
Horrified society and surveillance companies, as well as Governments' laws in terms of privacy, are driving "Americanized" cities into sealed bubbles of residential tissue. The promise of peaceful areas with no threats from the outside, a hypertrophied garden, and poor but "kitschly-hype" constructions, are blinding people onto a kind of fake high-level way of life. The fact is that there is no public transportation connecting those areas, and that there are no public infrastructures into those communities.
So, why including such situation into this post?
Lucrecia Martel is one of the most renowned film directors in Argentina, with films like "La ciénaga", "La niña santa" and "La mujer sin cabeza". She made an interesting short documentary about gated communities around Buenos Aires. Here it is.
